Getting to grips with money can feel tricky when you’re moving towards independence – but the right support is out there. From benefits and housing allowances to grants and one-off payments, there are schemes designed to help care-experienced young people get started and stay on track.
At Orchard Therapeutic Outreach, we’ll make sure you know what you’re entitled to, help you apply, and guide you in managing your money with confidence. From setting up Universal Credit and budgeting for bills, to finding grants for education or essentials, we’ll be alongside you every step of the way.
Benefits check & UC journal setup, evidence gathering and advance planning (so repayments don’t trip you up).
Budgeting coaching using your real bills, switching where helpful, energy-saving tips, and arrears plans.
Grant applications (education/work kit) and emergency referrals when needed.
Universal Credit (UC): You can usually claim from age 18. Add the Housing element if you rent and check Council Tax support on your council’s site. If you’re short at the start, you can request a UC advance (paid back from future UC).
LHA (private renting): If you’re a care leaver under 25, you’re usually entitled to the one-bedroom rate rather than the shared rate. Check your local LHA.
Setting-Up-Home Allowance: For essential furniture and equipment when you first move.
Grants & emergency help: Crisis food/energy vouchers via your council’s welfare scheme, and small grants for training, laptops, work kit, or driving lessons (see links below).
Council Tax: Many councils offer discounts or exemptions for care leavers — apply early.
